General information about CHIA seeds

CHIA seeds are the tiny seeds of Spanish sage (Salvia hispanica), which grows in some countries of South and Central America. These seeds are a traditional food and have been grown in some countries for more than 4000 years, across many generations. The Aztecs used chia seeds as a form of currency. The seeds have a mild nutty flavour  and are easily digestible.

Nutritional properties of CHIA seeds

CHIA seeds are an important source of protein, quality carbohydrates and fats, among which the unsaturated fatty acid omega-3 and fibre play a key role. The seeds also contain a large amount of antioxidants and calcium – 5 times more calcium than cow's milk.

In addition, the seeds contain iron, zinc, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and other important nutrients such as vitamins A, B, C and E.

The seeds are able to significantly lower blood sugar levels, because they help extend the process of converting consumed sugars into glucose.

CHIA seeds are a valuable addition for athletes, vegetarians, vegans, people who are overweight, and last but not least for infants, young children, and also pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. They are also a suitable part of the diet for people with high cholesterol and for supporting health and immunity. Eating chia seeds contributes to better physical performance. The seeds are gluten-free and can therefore also be eaten by people with a gluten allergy.

How to eat CHIA seeds

Before eating, it is a good idea to let the seeds "swell" in a glass of water for at least 15 minutes. Use either cold or warm water. While swelling, they absorb water and become easier to digest. Besides water, the seeds can also be added to juices, salads, porridge, yoghurt, soups or smoothies.

When eating the seeds on their own, don't forget to drink at least one glass of water with them.

CHIA seeds and weight loss

Thanks to their high content of beneficial fatty acids and fibre, chia seeds are an ideal dietary supplement for weight loss. The fibre in the seeds curbs cravings through its satiating properties. In addition, they are rich in protein, which is essential for maintaining muscle mass.

Another important property of chia seeds when it comes to weight loss is the effect of the gel formed by the seeds on the stomach. When the seeds come into contact with liquid and gastric juices, they form a physical barrier against digestive enzymes. This helps to extend the time it takes to convert carbohydrates into simple sugars. By influencing blood sugar in this way, the seeds delay feelings of hunger

Dosage of CHIA seeds

The recommended maximum daily dose  is 15 grams. It is best to divide this amount throughout the day and consume it gradually.

Attention!!! Chia seeds lower blood pressure. Caution is needed for people with low  blood pressure, for example older people. Likewise, people with heart problems or those taking blood-thinning medication should not eat Chia seeds.
