what is NAD+? NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in all living cells. It plays a key role in metabolic processes, especially in energy production. NAD+ acts as an electron carrier in redox reactions, which is essential for converting food into energy in cells. This molecule is also important for DNA repair and the regulation of cell functions. With age, however, NAD+ levels in the body decline, which can contribute to the ageing process and the development of various diseases.

What is ATP? Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the basic energy molecule found in every cell of living organisms. It serves as the main energy carrier in cellular processes. ATP consists of adenine (a nitrogenous base), ribose (a five-carbon sugar) and three phosphate groups.

Here is some key information about ATP:

1. Energy function: ATP stores and transports chemical energy in cells. When one of its phosphate groups is split off, energy is released that can be used to power various cellular processes, such as muscle contraction, protein synthesis and DNA replication.

2. Structure: ATP consists of adenine bound to ribose and three phosphate groups. Energy is stored in high-energy bonds between the phosphate groups.

3. Synthesis: ATP is synthesised mainly in the mitochondria through a process known as oxidative phosphorylation, which is part of cellular respiration. A smaller amount of ATP can also be produced in the cell's cytoplasm during glycolysis.

4. Hydrolysis: When a cell needs energy, ATP is hydrolysed into adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate (Pi), releasing energy. This process can be reversible, allowing ATP to be resynthesised from ADP.

5. Regeneration: ATP is constantly regenerated in cells. Cells contain only a small amount of ATP, so they must continuously replenish its supply through cellular metabolism.

6. Universality: ATP is a universal energy carrier for all forms of life, from the simplest single-celled organisms to complex multicellular organisms such as humans.

ATP is therefore key to the survival and functioning of cells, and thus of entire organisms. It helps transport energy, which is essential for all biological processes.

What is glutathione (GSH)? 

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide antioxidant made up of three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. It is a key component in the fight against oxidative stress and helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and toxins. Glutathione also plays an important role in liver detoxification processes, supports the immune system and helps regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. This antioxidant is essential for maintaining proper cell function and overall health of the body.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme that plays a key role in many biological processes in the human body, including energy metabolism and DNA repair.

Unfortunately, as we age, NAD+ levels in our body gradually decline. Research shows that levels of this important coenzyme drop by up to 50% from around 40 years of age. This decline has serious consequences for our health, above all for healthy cell production and for accelerating the process of cell ageing. 

A decrease in NAD+ levels has a direct negative impact on cell function, as this coenzyme is essential for various metabolic pathways. With a lack of NAD+, cells' ability to repair damaged DNA deteriorates, increasing the risk of mutations and subsequently diseases such as cancer or neurodegenerative diseases, as well as diabetes or fatty liver.

In addition, reduced NAD+ levels can lead to the weakening of mitochondria, the energy centres of cells, resulting in an overall decline in energy and vitality.

NAD+ is formed from vitamin B3 (niacin), which is essential for its synthesis. However, the conversion of vitamin B3 into NAD+ is not a direct process and involves several steps in the metabolic pathway. After consuming foods or supplements containing vitamin B3, this vitamin must go through several enzymatic reactions to be converted into NAD+. Unfortunately, various factors, such as genetic predisposition, health status or age, can affect the efficiency of this conversion, meaning that not all the vitamin B3 consumed will be effectively converted into NAD+.

Although a diet rich in vitamin B3 can support NAD+ synthesis, it is important to realise that this may not always be sufficient to maintain optimal levels of this coenzyme.

That is why interest has been growing in recent years in food supplements that directly contain NAD+ or its precursors, such as nicotinamide riboside (NR) or nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). These substances can directly increase NAD+ levels in the body, helping to improve cell function and slow down the ageing process.
