Vesantech Diamine oxidase DAO 6 000 000 HDU, 120 capsules
Code: 15644Product detailed description
DAO is vegan and is made from peas, has an exceptional dose of diamine oxidase, whereas similar products on the market are made from pig kidneys and have significantly lower doses. DAO is minimalist and functional, with meaningful ingredients (catalase + inulin). Competing products contain many excipients, which have almost no effect but increase costs and the potential risk of sensitivity.
Diamine oxidase (DAO)
- An enzyme that breaks down (degrades) biogenic amines, especially histamine.
- If DAO is deficient, histamine can accumulate excessively in the body, which may cause symptoms of histamine intolerance (e.g. headaches, skin redness, digestive problems).
- DAO is found naturally in the gut, where it helps maintain the proper balance of histamine in the body.
Catalase
- An antioxidant enzyme whose main role is to break down hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) into water and oxygen.
- It protects cells from oxidative stress and free radical damage.
- It occurs in most aerobic cells and is essential for the normal functioning of metabolic processes.
Combination diamine oxidase (DAO) and catalase is beneficial especially for histamine regulation and protection against oxidative stress. Together they thus make coping with histamine intolerance more effective and at the same time reduce the risk of oxidative damage.
Histamine intolerance versus allergic reaction:
Diamine oxidase (DAO) lowers the level of histamine from food or in the body, but it is not a solution for allergy (e.g. to grapefruit). An allergy is an immune reaction most often mediated by IgE antibodies, whereas histamine intolerance is a problem of insufficient histamine breakdown. This means that if someone has a genuine grapefruit allergy, taking DAO will not prevent an allergic reaction.
An allergy (e.g. to grapefruit) is an immune response in which contact with an allergen triggers a whole chain of reactions (including the release of histamine from immune cells). In the case of an allergy, it is not enough to just “remove histamine”; the problem is that the body reacts to a specific protein in grapefruit.
Histamine intolerance arises when the body cannot break down histamine quickly enough (e.g. due to reduced DAO activity or other factors). Symptoms can be similar to an allergy (redness, itching, digestive problems), but the cause is different (it involves excess histamine from food or histamine released in the body).
The role of DAO
Diamine oxidase (DAO) helps break down histamine, especially that found directly in foods (e.g. fermented products, ripened cheeses, red wine).
If someone has histamine intolerance, supplements with DAO may ease symptoms after eating foods rich in histamine.
In an allergy, however, the problem lies in the “faulty” recognition of a protein as dangerous. DAO does not address the situation here, because the triggering of an allergic reaction is mediated by IgE antibodies, which activate immune cells, and these release various mediators including histamine.
DAO in allergies – will it help or not?
- In histamine intolerance: DAO supplements may help if symptoms are related to an accumulation of histamine from food or the gut.
- In genuine allergies: DAO will not stop the production of histamine in an allergic reaction, because in this case histamine is released by immune cells (mast cells, mastocytes) in response to the allergen.
- To ease allergic reactions, the following are therefore used antihistamines (H1 blockers), which block histamine receptors, not its production.
EXAMPLE: Grapefruit allergy vs. histamine
If someone is allergic to grapefruit, their body reacts as soon as it detects the allergen in the grapefruit – even if they took a DAO supplement, a serious reaction (swelling, hives, breathing difficulties) can still occur.
DAO can break down histamine that has already been released or is being absorbed, but it does not block the immune trigger itself.
So let me sum it up once more in conclusion:
Grapefruit allergy: IgE-mediated reaction → DAO will not help.
Histamine intolerance: Insufficient histamine breakdown → a DAO supplement may reduce symptoms.
If you have a genuine allergy, e.g. to grapefruit, even DAO will not allow you to eat grapefruit safely. In such a case it is essential to limit grapefruit in your diet or avoid it completely.
