Let's start with the biology. Milk thistle is a plant belonging to the daisy family, its Latin name is Silybum marianum. In appearance it looks very similar to a thistle. It grows to a height of 60 – 150 centimetres and is an annual or biennial plant, meaning it flowers either every year or every other year. Milk thistle comes from the Mediterranean region and Asia, and in the wild you can also come across it on the Canary Islands. Although at first glance it comes from relatively exotic countries, it is in fact not at all demanding in terms of conditions. Did you know that you can grow it without any problems even in Slovakia?

Scientifically proven effects
Positive effects of Milk Thistle on the human body were already noticed by folk healers long ago. Over time, science began to study this plant, discovering in the leaves, flowers, but especially the hard fruits of Milk Thistle valuable substances suitable for supporting various organs of the human body. Let's take a look at at least some of them.
Flavolignans and Silymarin
It is mainly because of the high content of these two substances that Milk Thistle is so significant for medicine and healing. Flavolignans and Silymarin are important for the proper functioning of the liver. The liver uses them to eliminate toxins and poisons, while they also contribute to the regeneration of damaged liver cells and protect them from the effects of undesirable substances.
The liver is burdened every day, and without these substances it cannot perform its function well. Toxins then build up in the body and cause serious problems. The liver needs to be supported and regenerated preventively, but an increased intake of Flavolignans and Silymarin is especially important in cases of various poisonings of the body, whether by mushrooms, alcohol, or toxins from food. In cases of poisoning, the liver has to run at full capacity to deal with the undesirable substances. Milk Thistle was already used by folk healers as an "antidote" after various poisonings. Its effect is valued to this day, and Milk Thistle is a key ingredient in many medicines available in pharmacies, including on prescription.
In addition to liver regeneration, these substances also support the proper functioning, detoxification and regeneration of the rest of the digestive system, especially the stomach and gallbladder. Milk Thistle is also often used to relieve nausea.
Amino acids and fatty acids
Amino acids are an important antioxidant, meaning they help prevent oxidative stress in cells and support their rapid regeneration. Cells are exposed to oxidative stress especially during inflammation and viral diseases, so Milk Thistle speeds up the treatment of various illnesses and serves as good prevention.
Fatty acids, on the other hand, are notable for being the healthiest type of fat. Milk Thistle contains several types of fatty acids; among the most effective we can mention linoleic acid, for example. It has a unique property - it slows down the ageing of the body. Ageing is caused by free radicals, which gradually spread throughout the whole body. Linoleic acid can eliminate these free radicals, thereby also slowing down the ageing process.
Flavonoids
These are significant mainly for their positive effect on the cardiovascular system, having a positive influence on the health of blood vessels and the heart. Their effect shows up as improved blood circulation throughout the whole body. This effect is even so pronounced that Milk Thistle is an ingredient in some products for improving erections. It helps improve blood flow to the genitals, thus directly affecting male potency.
But that's still not all. In smaller amounts, Milk Thistle also contains many other valuable vitamins and minerals, whose combination creates a truly powerful mix with numerous positive effects. Milk Thistle also helps, for example, with relieving migraines, depression, stress and anxiety, and even helps lower cholesterol levels in the body, while in the form of compresses it also helps treat skin conditions. Incredible what one ordinary thistle can do...
Negative effects and forms of use
No negative effects have been observed, but pregnant women and people suffering from high blood pressure and a lack of iron and calcium should avoid taking it. Milk thistle should not be taken together with milk or alcohol. In other cases, taking it is safe and free of side effects.
Milk Thistle can be taken in the form of tea made from the leaves and flowers, and various oils and tinctures are also made from it. However, the most active substances are contained in the fruits, which are crushed.
It's now up to you which form of use you choose. One thing is certain, however – significant positive effects won't take long to show...
