Ginger (Lat. Zingiber officinale) is characterised by many beneficial effects on human health. It originates from Asia and reached Europe as early as the 9th century.

The main active substances in ginger are essential oils and the pungent compound gingerol, which has a similar chemical composition to capsaicin, the active pungent substance in pepper. It has the ability to dilate blood vessels  and improve blood circulation to the peripheral parts of the body – the hands and feet. It belongs to the foods that can produce heat in the body and thus warm up the whole organism. It speeds up metabolism by up to 20%. Besides these substances, ginger also contains essential oils, substances with antibiotic effects, vitamins B9, C and E, and among minerals magnesium, potassium, calcium, selenium, phosphorus, iron and zinc.

The best-known effect of ginger is its antiseptic and antibacterial effect, as it effectively suppresses the multiplication of bacteria and viruses. It is an irreplaceable helper  in the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases, colds and flu.

Ginger  stimulates the appetite, supports digestive processes starting with increased production of digestive juices, and speeds up the metabolism of nutrients from food consumed. It also prevents excessive gas formation and  eases intestinal cramps. It is one of  the most effective fat burners. 

Its effects will also be appreciated by people suffering from cardiovascular disease, since ginger lowers cholesterol, reduces blood clotting, and also lowers blood pressure. Its positive effects on headaches, which it can effectively relieve, have also been confirmed.

However,  we must also be cautious when using it. Experts recommend consuming a maximum of 4 g daily; at higher doses, stomach problems and diarrhoea, nausea, dizziness and even heart palpitations may occur. Pregnant women should avoid consuming ginger.
