Inulin

Lactosphore probiotics are based on beneficial soil bacteria. However, their effects are certainly not weaker for that – quite the opposite. Probiotics based in this way do not consume the beneficial bacteria of the small intestine. Lactosphore are probiotics that prevent the growth of putrefactive microorganisms, which could cause various digestive problems.

Mastic is a resin obtained from the low-growing evergreen tree Pistacia Lentiscus. The name ‘Chios’ comes from the Greek island of CHIOS in the north-east of the Aegean Sea, near the coast of Asia Minor, where the trees thrive thanks to the island's special microclimate. It is very rare due to the small area in which it is grown, which is precisely why it is considered a national treasure.

A bit of history

During the period of Ottoman rule on the island of Chios, the price of mastic was equal to the price of gold. Thieves caught stealing it faced execution on the sultan's orders. In 1822, when the so-called Chios massacre took place on the island and a large part of the population was killed, only the mastic-growing families were fortunate enough to survive the massacre, because by then this commodity was already a valuable and very important trade article, and it was precisely these families who managed to secure a regular supply of this miraculous substance, thanks in part to the special climate, particularly in the south of the island (the Mastichochoria region), where villages that still process mastic today can be found.

It is precisely thanks to this special climate that Chios mastic has its unique effects, and it has therefore been recognised with a protected designation of origin (a certificate of originality) — the so-called P.D.O. (Protected Designation of Origin), by which the European Union confirms the properties of mastic originating exclusively from the island of Chios.

Incidentally, mastic production suffered major damage in 2012, when the forests were hit by massive wildfires.

Harvesting mastic

The natural aromatic resin is obtained in the form of droplets from incisions made with sharp tools in the trunk of large branches. This process is, of course, carried out entirely by hand. It is the most important and most demanding stage of production

The tree must grow for at least 5 years before its resin can be used. The resin that flows out, which is initially clear and sticky, stays under the tree for about 20 days until it fully hardens, depending also on sunlight and ambient humidity. As it hardens, mastic changes colour to a yellowish-brown and its initially bitter taste turns sweetish. A strong, typical woody-fruity aroma and sweetish taste are characteristic of mature mastic.

A mature tree yields approximately 1 kg of resin per year.

The hardened resin is then collected and sorted into categories according to the size of the crystals, also known as ‘tears’. Crystal size ranges from a few millimetres up to approximately one centimetre. The crystal pieces are then washed and thoroughly cleaned.

Individual growers then sell the entire harvest for further processing, which is centralised under the Chios Mastic Growers Association.

Use and effects

Chios mastic has been used in natural therapy in many areas since ancient times. One of the first to describe its effects was the famous and renowned physician Hippocrates, who used mastic to treat and prevent digestive problems, colds, as well as ailments of the oral cavity and to freshen the breath.

The effects of mastic have been, and continue to be, studied by various scientific disciplines — for example in the field of gastroenterology (studies on mastic's ability to eliminate the bacterium Helicobacter pylori), as well as the effects of Chios mastic on oral health and so on.

Today it is widely used not only in medicine but also in the food industry (flavouring meat, seafood, as an ingredient in cakes and confectionery, liqueurs, chewing gum, etc.) and in cosmetics (the manufacture of ointments, soaps, toothpastes, etc.). Equally important is its role and significance in the field of food supplements, whether in the form of the resin itself, powder, capsules or oil.

Composition of the resin

The exact composition of the resin is not known. Its uniqueness, however, lies in a unique spectrum of approximately 80 active and aromatic substances (e.g. natural polymers, essential oils, terpenes, phytosterols, polyphenols and other highly active substances), thanks to which it is used in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.
