Product detailed description
Milk thistle is a herbal remedy derived from the milk thistle plant, also known as Silybum marianum.
This thorny plant has striking purple flowers and white veins, which traditional stories say were caused by drops of the Virgin Mary's milk falling on its leaves.
The active components in milk thistle are a group of plant compounds known as silymarin (1).
Its herbal remedy is known as milk thistle extract. Milk thistle extract has a high content of silymarin (between 65-80%), which has been concentrated from the milk thistle plant.
It is known that silymarin extracted from milk thistle has antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties (2, 3, 4).
Milk thistle is traditionally used to support the treatment of liver and gallbladder disorders, and supports breast milk production.
Milk thistle is often promoted for its liver-protective effects.
It is regularly used as a complementary therapy in people who have liver damage due to conditions related to alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, hepatitis. (1, 5, 6).
It is also used to protect the liver from toxic substances such as amatoxin, which is produced by the death cap mushroom and is lethal if ingested (7, 8).
Studies have shown improved liver function in people with liver disease who took a milk thistle supplement, suggesting that it may help reduce liver inflammation and liver damage (9).
Although further research is needed into how it works, it is likely that milk thistle reduces liver damage caused by free radicals, which are produced when the liver metabolises toxic substances.
One study also found that it may slightly extend the lifespan of people with liver cirrhosis due to alcoholic liver disease (10).
However, the results of studies have been mixed, and not everyone found that milk thistle extract had a beneficial effect on liver disease.
Therefore, more studies are needed to determine the dose and duration of treatment required for specific liver conditions (2, 11, 12).
And although milk thistle extract is commonly used as a complementary therapy for people with liver diseases, there is currently no evidence that it can prevent you from developing these conditions, especially if you have an unhealthy lifestyle.
SUMMARY Milk thistle extract may help protect the liver from damage caused by disease or poisoning, although further research is needed.
